Abstract: In a representative sample of 2,030 U.S. children aged 2-17, 13.9% report lifetime exposure to disaster, and 4.1% report experiencing a disaster in the past year. “…Cronbach' s a for the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Young Children was 0.86 (28 items) and for the Trauma Symptoms Checklist for Children was 0.93 (25 items). Because these measures are often and generally used in their entirety, [20][21][22][23] and we were interested only in global mental health, we created a total mental health distress score. The item wording, however, differed for the 2 measures so the total score for the sample was created by summing the anger, depression, and anxiety scales of each measure and then standardizing and merging the standardized mental health scores for each age group.…”

“…1 In a representative sample of more than 2000 US children 2 through 17 years of age, nearly 14% were reported to have been exposed to a disaster in their lifetime, with more than 4% of disasters occurring in the past year. 1 Disasters, thereby, affect the lives of millions of children every year, whether through natural disasters, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, or floods; human-made disasters, such as industrial accidents, war, or terrorism; or as a result of pandemics or other naturally occurring disease outbreaks. Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of disasters and other traumatic events because of a lack of experience, skills, and resources to be able to independently meet their developmental, socialemotional, mental, and behavioral health needs.…”
