Dirofilaria repens infection in a dog imported to Norway

Abstract: Dirofilaria repens infection was diagnosed in a dog that had been imported to Norway from Hungary three years previously. The dog was a four-year-old castrated male mixed-breed dog and presented for examination of two masses on the right thoracic wall. Fine needle sampling from the subcutaneous nodules and subsequent cytological examination revealed a high number of microfilariae and a pyogranulomatous inflammation. At re-examination approximately 3 weeks later, both masses had apparently disappeared spontaneo… Show more

“…Nodule formation can result from direct, space‐occupying action of the nematodes or from chronic inflammation . The present study revealed that subcutaneous canine dirofilariasis is characterized by either dermatitis or panniculitis, which has been reported by others previously . The dermatitis/panniculitis varied from purulent to pyogranulomatous to granulomatous reflecting different stages (acute/chronic) of the inflammation.…”

“…The climatic conditions which facilitate the extrinsic incubation for Dirofilaria species extend the geographical area of these parasites towards Northern-Europe (Genchi et al 2011). Other factors, such as human activities (e.g., dog import) may also support the introduction of these parasites into novel territories within Europe (Saevik et al 2014). In addition, the aggressive spread of the invasive Aedes albopictus mosquito (Schaffner and Mathis, 2014) along with its potential vector capacity even for Dirofilaria species (Licitra et al 2010), broadens the dispersion potential for Dirofilaria parasites.…”
