Directed qualitative content analysis: the description and elaboration of its underpinning methods and data analysis process

Abstract: Qualitative content analysis consists of conventional, directed and summative approaches for data analysis. They are used for provision of descriptive knowledge and understandings of the phenomenon under study. However, the method underpinning directed qualitative content analysis is insufficiently delineated in international literature. This paper aims to describe and integrate the process of data analysis in directed qualitative content analysis. Various international databases were used to retrieve articles… Show more

“…Other data were synthesized qualitatively to map current evidence available to address the remaining study aims. Aims ii and iii were analyzed using directed content analysis [23] following the themes outlined by Berta et al [24], work environment, work attitudes, and work outcomes. Aim iv data was synthesized by grouping together similar interventions and descriptively summarizing the interventions that were effective in reducing burnout.…”

“…This approach involves the systematic, and replicable, distribution of information into defined categories [63]. It is considered to be a transparent and reliable method, allowing for rigorous data analysis and the ascertainment of a practical conclusion [68]. It is also considered to be a highly flexible approach that may be applied to a wide selection of documents [63].…”

“…Three approaches to content analysis have been identified, namely: conventional, directed and summative [68,69]. Of these, directed content analysis was adopted as the primary means of data analysis for the purpose of this research, and applied to the results of Events A, C and D. Conventional content analysis was adopted within a mixed-method approach, to assess the results of Event B.…”
