Direct vehicle-to-vehicle communication with infrastructure assistance in 5G network

Abstract: Abstract-Compared with today's 4G wireless communication network, the next generation of wireless system should be able to provide a wider range of services with different QoS requirements. One emerging new service is to exploit cooperative driving to actively avoid accidents and improve traffic efficiency. A key challenge for cooperative driving is on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication which requires a high reliability and a low end-to-end (E2E) latency. In order to meet these requirements, 5G should be e… Show more

“…In this part, the simulation results obtained from a system level simulator are provided and the LTE technology is applied to model the radio link performance. The evaluation methodology of packet E2E latency over PC5 and LTE-Uu interfaces are introduced in [19] and [13], respectively. Moreover, since our focus in this work is on the RAN, the message transition latency among different BSs is not inspected in detail.…”

“…To provide solutions to V2X communication, a lot of work in the literature focus on the exploitation of direct V2X communication [5] [6] [7], where the data packets are directly transmitted from the transmitter to the receiver without going through the network infrastructure. For instance, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) proposes to use PC5 interface to facilitate the direct communication between the two ends of V2X communication [8].…”

“…This is only one of the many applications requiring low latency. While for example, the concept of inter-vehicle communications has been around for almost two decades [24,25], today, following the development of autonomous vehicles, support for Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) [26] and Vehicle-to-Anything (V2X) [27] communication is becoming a real requirement for 5G networks. Since V2X requires ultra-low latency at the application level, this will pose low latency backhaul requirements even when the mobile cells serving the V2X ecosystem operate over a Distributed RAN or a C-RAN with a high layer functional split.…”

“…The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that about 100,000 crashes are caused by driver drowsiness or fatigue each year in the U.S. alone. Thus, incorporating automatic active vehicle safety techniques such as driver detection and warning mechanisms, driver assistance tools in vehicles can contribute significantly to preventing accidents and enhancing crash survival [9][10][11]. New standards for connected vehicles offer unprecedented potential for data sharing and cooperation between vehicles.…”
