Direct Utilization of Geothermal Energy

Abstract: Abstract:The worldwide application of geothermal energy for direct utilization is reviewed. This paper is based on the world update for direct-use presented at the World Geothermal Congress 2010 in Bali, Indonesia (WGC2010) [1] which also includes material presented at three world geothermal congresses in Italy, Japan and Turkey (WGC95, WGC2000 and WGC2005). This report is based on country update papers prepared for WGC2010 and data from other sources. Final update papers were received from 70 countries of whi… Show more

“…Based on data from the WGC2010 [10,11], the following comparisons with the U.S. geothermal data are made: As can be calculated compared to the worldwide figures, the United States has 28.8% of the installed capacity, and 24.7% of the annual energy produced for electricity generation; and 26.0% of the installed capacity, and 13.3% of the annual energy use. The low annual energy direct-use percentage for the U.S. is due mainly to the large number of geothermal heat pumps, which have a low capacity factor.…”

“…where the SA of the ponds depended on fish production (SI, Section S3) and where the cost was adapted from a previous study that assumed a 30-year life time and an interest rate of 8% (Boyd and Lund, 2003;Lund, 2010). Production would have to be seasonal in Illinois unless the ponds were indoors.…”

“…The NPV of combined heat and power (CHP) generation using a binary cycle and heat exchangers was calculated and compared to the NPV of heat generation for brines with average temperature above 90 Celsius ( • C) (Table 2) (Lund, 2010). Heat and power savings reflect assumed annual load hours and auxiliary electricity requirements for pumping and re-cooling (Table 2) (Frick et al, 2010).…”

“…This energy is considered to be renewable as long as it is used reasonably and rationally (e.g., [6] and references therein). For instance, among shallow and deep geothermal resources, geothermal heat pumps accounted for 47.2% of thermal energy use and 68.3% of the total installed capacity in the World in 2010 [7]. Geothermal energy resources therefore constitute an essential field of research and development in the diversification of energy resources to hinder global warming (e.g., [8]).…”
