Geothermal Energy Utilization in the United States of America

Abstract: Geothermal energy is used for electric power generation and direct utilization in the United States. The present installed capacity (gross) for electric power generation is 3,087 MWe with about 2,024 MWe net delivering power to the gird producing approximately 16,600 GWh per year for a 94% net capacity factor. Geothermal electric power plants are located in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming. The direct utilization of geothermal energy including the heating of pools an… Show more

“…While ground source heat pump systems are initially more expensive than the equivalent air source system, they can benefit from lower operating and maintenance costs and a higher coefficient of performance (COP) (Lund, 1990). Air source heat pumps have the added disadvantage of high variability in air temperatures when compared to ground source heat pumps which benefit from a relatively constant ground temperature throughout the year.…”

“…In the 16th and 17th centuries, spa towns such as St. Moritz (Switzerland) and Bath (United Kingdom) were popular destinations for the upper-class Europeans (Medical Tourism, 2018). In the Americas and the Asia Pacific region, the practice is likely to be much older (Lung, 2005; Schafer, 1956). The use of thermal springs can be dated back thousands of years to the Native North and South Americans, the Indus Valley, China and Japan and the Polynesian peoples in the Asian Pacific area and New Zealand (Erfurt-Cooper and Cooper, 2009).…”
