Direct simultaneous determination of eight sweeteners in foods by capillary isotachophoresis

Abstract: A method for isotachophoretic determination of sweeteners of different character in candies and chewing gums was developed. A capillary of 0.8 mm ID and 90 mm effective length made of fluorinated ethylene-propylene copolymer is filled with an electrolyte system consisting of 10 mM HCl + 14 mM Tris, pH 7.7 (leading electrolyte) and 5 mM L-histidine + 5 mM Tris, pH 8.3 (terminating electrolyte). The analysis is performed at a driving current of 200 microA and for detection current is decreased to 100 microA. Bor… Show more

“…Good linearity was obtained for all sweeteners over large ranges of concentrations. Limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were comparable with those obtained by the cited isotachophoresis method (Herrmannová et al, 2006). These analytical parameters were also considered in the most cases better than ones for CE methods with photometric detection (Frazier et al, 2000;Horie et al, 2007;Huang, Chuang, Chiu, & Yeh, 2005;Walker, Zaugg, & Walker, 1997).…”

“…We can note that separations with good resolution can be obtained in less than 6 min. This separation time is smaller than half of that required in the previous isotachophoresis method (Herrmannová et al, 2006) also using conductivity detection. Although a positive separation voltage is applied in the CE-C 4 D method the anionic sweeteners are moved towards the cathode by the electroosmotic flow (EOF).…”

“…Furthermore, there are some papers reporting determination of sweeteners without chromatographic separation, most of them dealt with the determination of cyclamate join with another sweetener (Armenta et al 2004;Herrmannová et al 2006;Rocha et al 2005).…”

“…However, there are also examples of the use of capillary electrophoresis (Herrmannovà, Křivànkova, Bartoš, & Vytřas, 2005;Pesek & Matyska, 1997), flow injection (Capitán-Vallvey, Valencia, Nicolás, & García-Jiménez, 2006;Peña, Limba, & Saraiva, 2004), biosensors (Campanella, Aturki, Sammartino, & Tomassetti, 1995) and voltammetry (Medeiros, De Carvalho, Rocha-Filho, & Fatibello-Filho, 2008) applications for aspartame quantitative determination. Spectrophotometry (Cantarelli, Pellerano, Marchevsky, & Camiña, 2009) and infrared spectroscopy (Khurana, Cho, Shim, Li, & Jun, 2008;Kizil, Irudayaraj, & Seetharaman, 2002) in conjunction with multivariate techniques of data treatment were applied for aspartame quantification.…”
