A high-dose of vitamin B 3 in silkworm diet interrupts larval feeding and normal growth. High mortality of larvae occurs during molting and they cannot complete this process normally. Also the larvae exhibit nicotinamide hypervitaminosis symptoms such as immobility, dyspepsia, darkening of the skin, inability to excrete normally, exerting brownish fluid from anus and swelling of rectal muscles. Maximum larval weights in 1, 2 and 3 g/l treatments were 2⋅9, 1⋅6 and 1⋅2 g respectively, while maximum larval weight in the control was 5⋅6 g. Larval stage compared to control had increased 18, 26 and 31 days respectively. The concentration increase of uric acid in haemolymph demonstrates the hyperuricemia, while other measured biochemical compounds show significant decrease; sodium and potassium did not change significantly.[Etebari K and Matindoost L 2004 Effects of hypervitaminosis of vitamin B3 on silkworm biology; J. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of supplemental probiotic preparation on performance indices, serum enzymes and electrolytes of broiler chickens. Two hundred (200) day-old Marshall broiler chicks were randomly selected and distributed based on the level of supplementation into four groups of 50 chicks each (Control, C; E 1 0.5%, E 2 1.5% and E 3 2.0%). Chickens fed 2.0% probiotic had a significantly higher body weight when compared with the control group. Activity of alanine aminotransferase differed significantly in the group E 1 0.5%, and especially (p<0.01) in the group E 1 1.5%. Alkaline phosphatase activity decreased significantly (p<0.05), when compared with that of the control group. Serum calcium and phosphorus concentrations in experimental groups were significantly higher. Potassium concentration in experimental group rose significantly (p<0.05), when compared with that of the control broiler chickens. In conclusion, supplementing broiler feeds with 2.0% yeast probiotic improved performance indices, serum enzyme activities and enhanced the maintenance of electrolyte homeostasis in broiler chickens.

SummaryPartial ileal bypass (PIB) surgery is a method for the treatment of familial hypercholesterolaemia in man. Since the rabbit is frequently used as an animal model in experimental studies on PIB, we have investigated the long-term effects of this surgical procedure on the health status of rabbits. Forty-eight weeks after surgery plasma and liver cholesterol levels were decreased by about 40%. The inner diameter of the bypassed ileum was drastically reduced, unlike its length. The bypassed segment did not show clear histological abnormalities. The microflora of the caecum was similar in control and PIB rabbits. PIB did not influence liver histology. The bile of the rabbits with PIB was less lithogenic than that of control animals. Blood haemoglobin levels, haematocrit values and plasma concentrations of alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, yglutamyl transferase and lactate dehydrogenase were not changed after PIB. Plasma levels of albumin, creatinine, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin BI2 and folic acid were not significantly affected by PIB. Rabbits with PIB had significantly higher plasma levels of bilirubin and zinc than control rabbits, but plasma vitamin E concentrations were significantly lower. These results may be of importance for further studies on the effects of PIB in rabbits.
