Direct measurement of kilo-tesla level magnetic field generated with laser-driven capacitor-coil target by proton deflectometry

Abstract: A kilo-tesla level, quasi-static magnetic field (B-field), which is generated with an intense laser-driven capacitor-coil target, was measured by proton deflectometry with a proper plasma shielding. Proton deflectometry is a direct and reliable method to diagnose strong, mm3-scale laser-produced B-field; however, this was not successful in the previous experiment. A target-normal-sheath-accelerated proton beam is deflected by Lorentz force in the laser-produced magnetic field with the resulting deflection patt… Show more

“…The currently reachable magnetic gradient (up to 10 6 –10 7  Tm −1  2331) has indirect effects related to the application of HGMGs to cells. First, the effects of magnetic fields with a gradient on the order of 10 6  Tm −1 can manifest itself through the change of the probability of opening/closing mechanosensitive ion channels.…”

“…Moreover, theoretical results22 show that an HGMF can lead to a significant enhancement of the performance of a chemical biocompass believed to exist in certain animals and birds. A non-uniform magnetic field up to 610 T with a gradient on the order of 10 6  Tm −1 on the millimeter scale was recently generated with a laser-driven capacitor-coil target by proton deflectometry23.…”

“…The first hint is to find a source of a huge magnetic field and correspondingly large magnetic gradient in the universe. [38] www.advancedsciencenews.com www.bioessays-journal.com Thus, in the vicinity of a magnetar, the mean value of the magnetic gradient is B/D % 10 4 -10 7 Tm À1 .…”

“…Only during the last decade, scientific evolution faced a dramatic increase of reachable magnetic field gradient values as follows. [38] The latter method promises to generate pulsed magnetic field amplitudes above 10 kT and corresponding increase of the gradient up to 10 8 T m À1 . [82] Microscopic scale: magnetic field generated by micromagnets B ¼ 1.2 T with spatial magnetic gradient up to 10 6 T m À1 .…”

“…Recently, a significant progress has been made in generating strong magnetic fields with laser-driven coils using ns-long laser pulses [10][11][12]. In the context of proton and ion acceleration, such fields can be viewed as static and nearly uniform.…”
