Direct Impulse Measurements of Ablation Processes from Laser-Surface Interactions

Abstract: A torsional impulse balance has been developed as a new diagnostic tool to study fundamental processes in laser-surface interactions. Of particular interest are the forces due to processes of laser ablation. With respect to the transfer of momentum, direct measurements of the transient forces can lead to a better understanding and characterization of the efficiency of the impulse that is possible under different configurations. The impulse balance has been designed and tested with a robust calibration system t… Show more

“…As the laser intensity is increased, plasma formation increases and has a greater shielding effect. [6] We also contrast the experimental results with the calculation results of Phipps' scaling law [7] . According to the Phipps' scaling law, for pulsewidth on the order of 7ns, the intensity for which C m is maximized should occur around 7×10 8 W/cm 2 .…”

“…Torsion pendula have also been addressed; e.g. in [7,8,9]. Piezoelectric force sensors were investigated mainly at UAH; important issues include, e.g., frequency cutoffs, impulse reflection [10], restitution behavior of targets [11], and minimization of noise arising through metal-metal impacts.…”

“…ALP has two types of thrust generation; direct ablation [13] and confined ablation [14]. In direct ablation, the target uses a small part of laser energy while the other dissipates due to inverse bremsstrahlung and plasma shielding, which results in lower thrust generation.…”
