Direct drive wave energy array with offshore energy storage supplying off‐grid residential load

Abstract: Current developments in wave energy conversion has focussed on locations where the wave energy resource is highest; using large devices to generate hundreds of kilowatts of power. However, it is possible to generate power from low power waves using smaller wave energy devices. These lower rated wave energy converters can form arrays to supply power to remote coastal or island communities which are off-grid. The paper introduces wave-to-wire modelling of wave energy arrays for off-grid systems using low power p… Show more

“…It means that the malfunctioning of one unit would not affect the operation of the other units, however only a reduction of power can be experienced and tolerated. In this case, smart energy storage systems can be deployed to act as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to compensate for the power deficit [72,84,117]. Also, the wave arrays and farms would benefit from the modular structure regarding design and interoperability.…”

“…[34]. The utilisation of a bidirectional DC/DC Ćuk converter with a SC system in a wave energy array is described in [35]. The SC voltage is chosen to be 750V and this is possible by adding six in series BMOD0063 P125 B08 SC modules from Maxwell Technologies [36].…”
