Direct determination of plutonium(V) and neptunium(V) complexation by carbonate ligand with CE‐ICP‐sector field MS

Abstract: Direct determination of the stability constants of some pentavalent actinides (Np and Pu) with carbonate ligands was investigated by CE-ICP-sector field MS (SFMS). The high sensitivity of ICP-SFMS coupled with the high separation power of CE makes it possible to determine the mobility of each species as well as the stability constants with good accuracy. A procedure for preparing pentavalent plutonium at trace level has been successfully tested enabling the study of Pu(V) complexation by CE-ICP-SFMS. Stability… Show more

“…23 In the case of neptunium, there are not as many investigations as in the case of uranium, especially in seawater. 60 Again, these scattered data show the importance of using speciation methods to identify the uranium(VI)/neptunium(V) species present in seawater. 60 Again, these scattered data show the importance of using speciation methods to identify the uranium(VI)/neptunium(V) species present in seawater.…”

“…detection. The use of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers has also enabled low-level detection of lanthanides or actinides in studies aiming at determining their carbonate complexation constants [16,17]. With commercial CE instruments, it is now possible to perform measurements at a 5-601C temperature range enabling to determine thermodynamic parameters such as entropy and enthalpy of reactions, which have never yet been done with inorganic systems and require a precise control of the effective temperature inside the capillary.…”

“…In the past few years, ACE has been widely used (i) to investigate chemical equilibria and measure stability constants of inorganic species and (ii) to determine the stable form of aqueous species [15,[17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. Models describing the formation of 1:1 complexes are often used [25][26][27] as well as models describing the formation of successive complexes using nonlinear regressions [15,17,19,21]. Moreover, commercial CE instruments perform measurements at a 5-60ЊC temperature range enabling to determine thermodynamic parameters such as entropy and enthalpy of reactions [25].…”
