Direct analysis of trace level bisphenol A, octylphenols and nonylphenol in bottled water and leached from bottles by ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry

Abstract: A high-throughput method was developed for the direct analysis of trace level bisphenol A (BPA), 4-n-octylphenol (4-n-OP), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP) and 4-n-nonylphenol (4-n-NP) in water samples by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (uHPLC/MS/MS) using an isotope-labeled internal standard. Aliquots of water samples were spiked with the internal standard and analyzed without sample cleanup or enrichment. All target analytes were chromatographically separated within 3 min and… Show more

“…BPA can release into the environment through its use and handling, and permitted discharges 2 . Recently, this compound and its derivatives have been found to be widely distributed in the natural environment, as well as in surface water 3 . Due to the high toxicity of phenolic compounds to humans, their removal has been taken a huge attention of many researchers 4 .…”

“…Few studies have tried to detect steroid hormones which are difficult to ionize by ESI or APCI with marginal results . Not surprisingly, several studies often rely on the use of chemical derivatization to increase sensitivity, even for LC/MS …”

“…[5,18] Not surprisingly, several studies often rely on the use of chemical derivatization to increase sensitivity, even for LC/MS. [26][27][28] APPI is based on the interaction of a photon beam created by a high intensity discharge lamp with the vapors of a nebulized liquid solution entering the MS source. [29] APPI is an ionization technique that has the capability to ionize compounds with various polarities while being remarkably tolerant of matrix additives.…”

“…Wang and Schnute [124] reported an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC/MS 2 ) method without previous sample preparation for the simultaneous quantification of NP and BPA. All target analytes were chromatographically separated within 3 min and LODs in the range 0.04–0.057  μ g·L −1 were achieved.…”
