“…A. Manganese-Schiff Base Complexes. The chemistry of tetradentate Schiff base manganese(II) complexes and their reaction with dioxygen have been extensively studied (Coleman and Taylor, 1980;Ebbs and Taylor, 1974;Wilkinson et al, 1987). Mnn(salen) reacts with dioxygen to yield Mnin(salen)OH, for which Lewis et al (Lewis et al, 1968) proposed a polymeric structure including unitary Mnin(salen)-0-Mnra(salen)*H20 on the basis of the magnetic property.…”

“…Since then, several transition metals, such as manganese (McAuliffe, 1988; Coleman and Taylor, 1980; Levason and McAuliffe, 1972;Boucher, 1972), iron (Collman, 1977;Jones et al, 1979;Traylor, 1981), cobalt (Jones et al, 1979; McLendon and Martell (1976), chromium (Cheung et al, 1976), nickel (Selbin and Junkin, 1960), copper (Simmons and Wilson, 1978;Vigato et al, 1990), titanium (Guilard et al, 1978;Latour et al, 1979), and a number of group VIII metals (Choy and O'connor, 1972/73;Vaska, 1973;Farrell et al, 1978), have been complexed with various types of ligands to synthesize hundreds of compounds. These compounds show reversible affinities for oxygen at various (generally low) temperatures and partial pressure of oxygen.…”

“…Dioxygen oxidation of manganese(II) complexes to manganese(IV) is unusual but not unknown. Schiff base ligands formed from salicylaldehyde when coordinated to manganese(II) lead to O 2 oxidation to the manganese(IV) state. Other dimeric Mn(IV)-Mn(IV) complexes have been prepared by H 2 O 2 oxidation of the manganese(III) species . Unlike these imine systems, the present amine system is expected to stabilize better the manganese(IV) state.…”

“…In this case, the cobalt(III) centers are six-coordinate and the remaining axial site is occupied by a DMF ligand. In contrast to this, the complexes [Co(acacen)] or [Co(bzacen)] react with dioxygen T only in the presence of a strong axial donor such as pyridine, to yield six-coordinate cobalt(III) superoxide complexes [Co(acacen)(py)(O 2 )] or (Co(bzacen)(py)(O 2 )] [11][12][13][14]. Complexes of neutral macrocyclic ligands are also known to react reversibly with dioxygen.…”
