Diode-pumped Nd:YVO4/BiBO blue laser at 440 nm

Abstract: We report a diode-pumped Nd:YVO 4 laser emitting at 880 nm based on the 4 F 3/2 -4 I 9/2 transition for the first time. A power of 1.13 W at 880 nm has been achieved in continuous-wave operation with a fiber-coupled laser diode emitting 28.6 W at 808 nm. Furthermore, intracavity secondharmonic generation in continuous-wave mode has also been demonstrated with a power of 233 mW at 440 nm by using a BiB 3 O 6 (BiBO) nonlinear crystal. The fluctuation of the blue output power was better than 2.3%. The beam qualit… Show more

“…Continuous wave (CW) vis ible coherent radiation at 559 and 440 nm were dem onstrated very recently through intracavity nonlinear optical interactions in a self Raman and a quasi three level Nd:YVO 4 laser [1,2]; high power single frequency laser oscillation was achieved with either Nd:YVO 4 or composite Nd:YVO 4 /YVO 4 crystal in a ring resonator [3,4]; various passively Q switched Nd:YVO 4 lasers were developed by employing differ ent saturable absorbers like Cr 4+ :YAG, GaAs, and car bon nanotube material [5][6][7]; efficient passively mode locked laser operation was also realized with Nd:YVO 4 crystal by use of the SESAM technique [8,9]. Besides the use of host for the Nd ion, the crystal of YVO 4 also proves to be effective laser medium when doped with Er, or with Tm and Ho.…”

“…These blue lasers are effi cient and powerful, nevertheless their wavelengths are too high compared to the 442 nm He-Cd laser. Recently, by frequency doubling the emission based on the 4 F 3/2 -4 I 9/2 transition of Nd doped crystals, deep blue lasers close to 442 nm were obtained [28][29][30][31][32]. Nd:…”

“…Yttrium ortho-vanadate (YVO 4 ) doped with rare earth, such as Nd, Er, Yb, is widely used for compact diode pumped solid state lasers as it offers several advantages like high slope efficiency, low laser threshold, wide pumping bandwidth and linearly polarized emission [1]. In recent years, lot of research work is also focused on making such laser crystals multifunctional by introduction of co-dopants like Cr for self-frequency-doubling, self-mode locking, self Qswitching etc., as these lead to compactness, low loss, and, moreover, simplicity in the laser design.…”
