Diode-pumped high-efficiency Tm:YAG lasers

Abstract: Eye-safe solid-state lasers that operate at 2 mm wavelength have many applications in medical, remote sensing and military technologies. With a 3-W CW laser-diode pumping, we obtained 760 mW 2.01 mm Tm:YAG laser under CW operation. The slope efficiency was 44% and the optical to optical efficiency reached 36%. In the acousto-optic Q-switched operation, laser pulses with the energy of 1.2mJ and 380 ns FWHM width have been achieved.

“…Recently, ppolarized CW laser oscillation of Tm 3+ ions in Zn-diffused channel waveguides operating at 1.76 mm under 795 nm pumping has been demonstrated [6]. The slope efficiency reported for these waveguide lasers is lower than that reported for other Tm 3+ lasers [7,8]. This fact could be related with non-optimized cavity design or to up-conversion processes that affect thulium luminescence, particularly after 690 nm pumping [9,10].…”

“…The spectra and energy levels of Tm-doped YAG crystal have previously been investigated by Gruber et al [16] and Tiseanu et al [17]. Most Tm:YAG lasers were pumped with peak 785 nm absorption lines of Tm 3þ [18][19][20]. The radiation emission of around 2 mm corresponds to transition from the 3 F 4 level to the 3 H 6 level for Tm.…”
