Dinoflagellate cyst stratigraphy of the Kimmeridge Clay (Upper Jurassic) from the Dorset coast, Southern England

Abstract: A palynological investigation of the Upper Jurassic Kimmeridge Clay in its type area (Dorset, southern England) identified twenty-five stratigraphically useful dinoflagellate cyst datums (range tops and bases). These have enabled the Kimmeridgian dinoflagellate cyst zonation of Woollam and Riding (1983) to be substantially refined. Eleven subzones are established within Woollam and Riding's Gonyaulacysta jurassica -Scriniodinium crystallinum (Gj/Sc), Scriniodinium luridum (SI) and Glossodinium dimorphum -Ding… Show more

“…The first occurrence of D. pannea as a zonal index species is mostly founded on Sub-boreal records. In England, it appears in the Early A. eudoxus Zone in Lincolnshire (Riding 1987) or younger still, the Pectinatites wheatleyensis Zone in Dorset (Riding and Thomas 1988). In the British-Danish sector of the North Sea it is recorded in the Late Kimmeridgian (Poulsen and Riding 2003) and in Poland, Poulsen (1994) notes its first occurrence in the Early Tithonian.…”

“…Assemblages from further north in Europe have markedly higher diversities (i.e., Riding and Thomas 1988). This may be due to partial restriction in the Lusitanian basin preventing some mixing of the dinoflagellates with areas outside Portugal.…”

“…Note that the summary logs in Figures 2, 3 and 4 have been redrawn against 'true' depth scale, allowing direct comparison with the type section. Dinocyst stratigraphy after Riding & Thomas (1988), ammonite zones and subzones after Cope (1967Cope ( , 1978 and Cope et al (1980). “…Examination of the BGS samples revealed the presence of palynomorphs of Carboniferous, Jurassic, and Cretaceous age ( (Riding & Thomas, 1988. The most stratigraphically restricted form is Crussolia deflandrei, which unequivocally indicates a derivation from the Weymouth Member of the Oxford Clay Formation (formerly Upper Oxford Clay).…”
