Dimensions of Musical Creativity

Abstract: Current literature on creative cognition has developed rich conceptual landscapes dedicated to the analysis of both individual and collective forms of creativity. This work has favored the emergence of unifying theories on domain-general creative abilities in which the main experiential, behavioral, computational, and neural aspects involved in everyday creativity are examined and discussed. But while such accounts have gained important analytical leverage for describing the overall conditions and mechanisms t… Show more

“…With this in mind, consider how the lockdown period helped P.6 realise he is part of a community of practice, and how 'interesting projects' are thought to evolve from mutual entanglement and collaboration; or, again, how another participant spontaneously started to chat with a colleague, leading to the discovery of novel learning opportunities supported by online resources. It is interesting to note that the need for novelty and exploration led to new forms of communication among students, highlighting the link between creativity and social connectedness explored in recent musical and non-musical literature (Sawyer and DeZutter 2009;Schiavio and Benedek 2020), particularly in pedagogical contexts (Burnard and Murphy 2013). More in general, the experiences reported by our participants well aligns with the three main avenues indicated to constitute the basis of e-learning:…”

“…Recent years witnessed a major growth of research on human and computational musical creativity in computer science, MIR and music psychology (Iñesta et al, 2016;Sturm et al, 2019a;Carnovalini and Rodà, 2020;Fernández and Vico, 2013;Schiavio and Benedek, 2020;Miranda, 2021). There are many different problem settings involved.…”

“…Aesthetic experiences, engaging the brain's reward network, are laden with tension, fluctuations in uncertainty, generating prediction errors ("surprises") that create a yearning for resolution, triggering predictive processes directed at future events of emotional significance (Koelsch, 2014;Lehne and Koelsch, 2015;Shany et al, 2019). Minimization of prediction error involves the embodied capacity to generate experience through action, thereby fostering creativity (Daikoku, 2019;Schiavio and Benedek, 2020). In this sense, CATs may tap into the intrinsic motivation to seek predictive progress and offer clients opportunities to venture out of predictable zones (Gottlieb et al, 2013).…”
