This article explores how individuals use online coping strategies after experiencing a negative life event. Many studies have shown that online coping is of rising importance. However, these studies have not provided all pieces of the puzzle because they tend to focus on one particular online venue (e.g., an online support group or social network site [SNS]) and on a limited number of coping strategies. This article aims to provide a more complete picture, by simultaneously examining multiple online and off-line coping strategies, using a survey administered to a representative sample of the 16þ population of the Netherlands. Furthermore, we analyze what kind of Internet activities are related to online coping and whether online coping is associated with well-being. Some 57% of our sample mentioned some form of online coping. Using the Internet for mental disengagement, active coping and planning were the most reported online coping strategies, whereas strategies aimed at emotional coping were reported less frequently. Online coping encompassed several activities: online gaming, which was associated with mental disengagement; searching for information, which was associated with problem-focused coping; and SNS and online support groups, which were associated with mental disengagement, problem-focused coping, and socioemotional coping. Finally, we examined the correlations between online coping and well-being. Controlling for off-line coping, we found online mental disengagement and online socioemotional coping to be inversely related to life satisfaction, self-esteem, and optimism, whereas correlations between online problem-focused coping and well-being were nonsignificant. The implications of these findings are discussed.

_________________________________________________________________ RESUMO-O objetivo do estudo foi adaptar o InventárioBriefCOPE para a população de estudantes de ensino superior de língua portuguesa, avaliar suas propriedades métricas e estimar sua invariância fatorial no Brasil e em Portugal. Os dados recolhidos numa amostra de 1573 estudantes de ambas as nacionalidades permitiram confirmar a estrutura fatorial de 14 factores do coping. O inventário apresentou validade fatorial, convergente e discriminante. Contudo, o modelo fatorial não apresentou invariância entre os países indicando que a utilização da versão em português do BriefCOPE não pode ser caucionada para comparações de pontuações de coping interpaíses. Palavras-chave -coping; estudantes universitários; avaliação; psicometria. ______________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT-The aim of this study was to adapt the BriefCOPE Inventory for Portuguese-speaking university students. We evaluate the Portuguese BriefCOPE psychometrics qualities and estimated the BriefCOPE factorial invariance in Brazil and Portugal. The data collected from a sample of 1573 students of both nationalities did confirm the 14-factor structure of the BriefCOPE and showed both factorial, convergent and discriminant related validities. However, the factor model did not show invariance across countries indicating that the use of the Portuguese version of the BriefCOPE cannot be bailed for comparisons of scores of inter-countries' student coping.

Associations between coping strategies and mental health outcomes in autistic adults

Compared to the general population, mental health difficulties are commonly reported in autistic adults. However, the ways in which coping strategies are associated with mental health and well‐being in this population remain unknown. Further, we do not know if, and if so, how these associations might differ to that of non‐autistic adults. In this study, we hypothesized that in both our autistic (N = 255) and non‐autistic (N = 165) adult samples, disengagement coping strategies (e.g., denial) would relate to poorer mental health and well‐being, while engagement coping strategies (e.g., problem solving) would relate to better mental health and well‐being. Regression analyses revealed that higher use of disengagement coping strategies was significantly associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression, and lower levels of well‐being in both samples. In contrast, increased use of engagement coping strategies was associated with better well‐being, but only in the autistic sample. Our results contribute to the characterization of negative and positive mental health outcomes in autistic adults from a coping perspective, with potential to offer novel information regarding coping strategies to consider when addressing support options for mental health difficulties in the autistic adult population. Lay Summary Mental health conditions (such as anxiety and depression) and poor well‐being are commonly reported in autistic adults. Research suggests that how one copes with stress is associated with one's mental health and well‐being. However, we have little information about how coping strategies relate to the mental health of autistic adults, and whether this might be different in non‐autistic adults. In this study, we examined the relationship between coping strategies and mental health in a large group of autistic individuals aged 15–80 years. We then compared this with similar aged non‐autistic individuals. We found that in both the autistic and non‐autistic individuals, using more disengagement coping strategies (such as being in denial, blaming oneself) was related to poorer mental health and well‐being. Additionally, using more engagement coping strategies (such as problem solving, acceptance) was related to better mental health and well‐being, but only in the autistic individuals. These results can help inform support services, as they highlight the coping strategies that may need to be focused on (i.e., developing engagement coping strategies and reducing disengagement coping strategies) in order to better support the mental health of autistic individuals.
