Dijets at Tevatron cannot constrain SMEFT four-quark operators

Abstract: We explore the sensitivity of Tevatron data to heavy new physics effects in differential dijet production rates using the SMEFT in light of the fact that consistent and conservative constraints from the LHC cannot cover relatively low cutoff scales in the EFT. In contrast to the results quoted by the experimental collaborations and other groups, we find that, once consistency of the perturbation expansion is enforced and reasonable estimates of theoretical errors induced by the SMEFT series in E Λ are included… Show more

“…We also neglect other theoretical uncertainties inherent to the SMEFT framework itself, such as omitting quadratic dimension-6 or linear dimension-8 contributions and other higher-order effects (see, e.g., refs. [204][205][206][207][208][209] for discussions of these and related uncertainties). We note that operator mixing from RGE running and loops can also induce extra constraints [113,118,167,210] and the effects of including SMEFT operators in parton distribution functions are also starting to be investigated [211].…”

“…Similar statements apply to the constraints following from the CMS measurement of the dijet angular distributions [19]. On general grounds, the limits (2.5) and (3.2) therefore only constrain strongly-coupled ultraviolet (UV) completions -for related discussions of the applicability of the SMEFT to dijet searches see [13][14][15][16][17][18]. The situation is better in the case of the bound on C bG that we have derived from the recent ATLAS measurement [45] of pp → bb Z/γ * → bb + − , because the energy scales tested by this measurement are all below 1 TeV.…”

“…Jet physics has previously been used to put constraints on SMEFT operators [13][14][15][16][17][18]. In this section we will exploit searches for unflavoured jet pairs to constrain the magnitudes of the Wilson coefficients of the operators introduced in (1.1).…”
