Automatic source-code inspection tools help to assess, monitor and improve code quality. Since these tools only examine the software project's codebase, they overlook other possible factors that may impact code quality and the assessment of the technical debt (TD). Our initial hypothesis is that human factors associated with the software developers, like coding expertise, communication skills, and experience in the project have some measurable impact on the code quality. In this exploratory study, we test this hypothesis on two large open source repositories, using TD as a code quality metric and the data that may be inferred from the version control systems. The preliminary results of our statistical analysis suggest that the level of participation of the developers and their experience in the project have a positive correlation with the amount of TD that they introduce. On the contrary, communication skills have barely any impact on TD. Index Terms-code quality, technical debt, human factors, data mining.

Few economic sectors are more regulated than healthcare. Although excessive healthcare regulation is a bad thing, regulatory compliance may bring with it many benefits, such as market entry, product quality and availability, as well as access to tax rebates and financial incentives. Goal-oriented regulations, in particular, embody in their formulation specific propositions to maximize compliance benefits provided the achievement of public policy goals. In this paper, we develop an in-depth study of goal-oriented healthcare equipment regulations. We use expert knowledge and process-mining techniques to investigate what goes on with regulatory compliance and with the benefits obtained by equipment manufacturers when the healthcare equipment regulation is goal-oriented. We present here a multi-company exploratory case study on the variability of mean times-to-benefit after compliance and on regulatory process improvement, focused on the diagnostic imaging equipment segment and the regulatory context in Brazil. We show that, in some cases, mean times-to-benefit depend on the compliance of different categories of diagnostic imaging equipment with technical requirements found in the applicable norms. Moreover, we present process improvement cases elicited during goal-oriented regulatory process analysis and modeling activities. Our study illustrates the usefulness of applying expert knowledge and process mining techniques together in the healthcare equipment domain. It also suggests that healthcare equipment product-management practices should be concerned not only with analyzing and ensuring regulatory compliance but also with regulation dynamics. An Educational Approach for Present and Future of Digital Transformation in Portuguese Organizations

The current technological evolution allows us to easily and quickly obtain more information, computing capacity, communication and connectivity, in addition to allowing new forms of collaboration between disperse networks of diversified actors. This new reality not only offers enormous potential for innovation and enhanced performance for organizations but also, extends beyond the classic boundaries to affect individuals, other organizations and society in general. At the same time, this reality makes the ability of organizations to uphold their competitive advantage more challenging, since the control of the elements of their operating environment decreases drastically as they increasingly control the elements of the same environment. This is how the digital transformation of organizations becomes unavoidable, because otherwise they tend to disappear. In this context, it is necessary to infer our students’ methods for researching, identifying and taking solutions about if organizations in Portugal are already living the aforementioned digital transformation or if they are aware of the need to adapt to this new reality. The main goal of this research formatted as educational approach, is to evaluate and compare the current state of digital adoption in terms of the preparation according to the prevailing technological categories (pillars and innovation accelerators), as well as future priorities of organizations in the implementation of digital transformation in Portuguese organizations. To evaluate such objectives, a Project Based Learning (PBL) approach was used to reinforce the research and decision-making skills of undergraduate business students. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that organizations are aware of the need to accommodate the digital transformation not to fail and disappearing. However, it is not possible to conclude which strategy is to be adopted by the organizations, and how such a strategy will affect the organization as a whole, in particular as in respect of its business model.
