Digital Technologies as External Enablers of New Venture Creation in the IT Hardware Sector

Abstract: We develop theory about how and when digital technologies enable new venture creation processes. We identify two fundamental properties of digital technologies-specificity and relationality-and develop propositions that link these properties to six enabling mechanisms: compression, conservation, expansion, substitution, combination, and generation. We use the linked properties and mechanisms to determine how and when in the venture creation process-from prospecting to developing to exploiting-digital technolog… Show more

“…Hence the resulting network serves a purpose on its own. In digital disruption, innovations are created by leveraging the digital components in a given domain [6]. The role of digital technology in digital disruption thus varies depending on whether components enable an innovation, or are themselves forming the innovative composition.…”

“…Not all startups are led by technology entrepreneurs (Bailetti, 2012;Giones & Brem, 2017a;Wallin et al, 2016). However, in disruptive environments, we increasingly notice the adoption of digital technologies to implement startup business models (von Briel et al, 2018;Westerlund et al, 2014) or organizational structures (Nambisan, 2016). So, in the end, technology commercialization and entrepreneurship often become intertwined in a complex process of co-evolution, resulting in the emergence of new technologies as well as entrepreneurial activity (Giones & Brem, 2017b).…”
