Digital soil mapping in the Bara district of Nepal using kriging tool in ArcGIS

Abstract: Digital soil mapping has been widely used to develop statistical models of the relationships between environmental variables and soil attributes. This study aimed at determining and mapping the spatial distribution of the variability in soil chemical properties of the agricultural floodplain lands of the Bara district in Nepal. The study was carried out in 23 Village Development Committees with 12,516 ha total area, in the southern part of the Bara district. A total of 109 surface soil samples (0 to 15 cm dept… Show more

“…Average annual rainfall data collected from 40 meteorological stations around the study area were interpolated using the kriging tool in ArcGIS to prepare rainfall and R factor map using Equation 7 [48]. The kriging tool was used because it calculates the best un-biased predictor of values at non-sampled areas [49,50].…”

“…A GIS software populated with the correct data can help in the organization, interpretation, and communication of environmental data. For example, this particular GIS software has been used to create digital soil mapping, generated by kriging interpolation, in different urban areas [28]. Also, the GIS software was used [29] for comparing spatial interpolation methods in order to estimate the precipitation distribution.…”

“…The acquired data were fitted to spherical semivariogram and then interpolated with the ordinary kriging technique in ArcMap. Kriging is a vital tool to estimate values at non-sampled places based on the sampled data [46,47]. It is an interpolation method which approximates the value of a function at a given point as a weighted amount of the function values at the adjacent points [48].…”
