Testing Different Interpolation Methods Based on Single Beam Echosounder River Surveying. Case Study: Siret River

Abstract: Bathymetric measurements play an important role in assessing the sedimentation rate, deposition of pollutants, erosion rate, or monitoring of morphological changes in a river, lake, or accumulation basin. In order to create a coherent and continuous digital elevation model (DEM) of a river bed, various data interpolation methods are used, especially when single-beam bathymetric measurements do not cover the entire area and when there are areas which are not measured. Interpolation methods are based on numerica… Show more

“…There are various novel methods that are available for mapping, such as statistical models (e.g., inverse distance weighting (IDW), local polynomial interpolation (LPI), radial basis function (RBF), ordinary kriging (OK), and empirical Bayes kriging (EBK)) and machine learning models using neural networks. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages (İmamoglu et al 2016 ; Bhunia et al 2018 ; Arseni et al 2019 ). RBF is one of the most important methods that are used to find an optimal shape parameter.…”

“…The alluvial deposits in the riverbed have different position with respect to the main drainage current. The fluvial style of the river present an important role in the genesis of the islands (Grecu 2018;Arseni et al 2019).…”

“…In areas that are not measured, is required an interpolation method by taking into account various morphometric and morphologies and a wide range of scales, EFCD makes directly the interpolation using the nearest neighbor approach. Regarding the blanking zone, this is taked into account in the measurements to diminish the error 29 .…”
