Digital heritage research re-theorised: ontologies and epistemologies in a world of big data

Abstract: This article provides the first theoretical treatment of the ontologies and epistemologies of digital heritage research at the time of the interconnected and social web, based on extensive empirical and analytical investigation. We draw on observations and concepts developed while conducting the first study of public experiences of the past that utilised big data -over 1.4 million Facebook posts, comments and replies -to revisit or generate new theory from the ground up. We expect that this will help scholars … Show more

“…One of them uses the interpretative mapping method, which could be accomplished either a derivation from cartographic or an independent form of sense or impression (Hossain & Barata, 2019). Meanwhile, digital mapping positions heritage as part of the big data and relates to the social web (Bonacchi & Krzyzanska, 2019) for global use and access. The theoretical exploration and empirical conditions above remind the importance of mapping Omah Pencu in Kudus Kulon's historic area towards sustainable preservation.…”

“…Finally, we can briefly reflect on the afterlives of heritage-based tribalism in the form of future (data) heritages. The data we used to undertake our research is more than just a source of information: it is also heritage in the making (Bonacchi and Krzyzanska, 2019). It was deployed and re-hashed to generate social divisions, but its agency is curtailed over time, when a topic is no longer the centre of public attention and Twitter discussions have moved elsewhere.…”

“…This aims to enhance the recent empirical work of archaeological scholars (e.g. Bonacchi, Altaweel & Krzyzanska 2018;Bonacchi & Krzyzanska 2019;Huffer & Graham 2017; which have not included explicit discussions of the methodological challenges of this type of research. This position paper should, I hope, encourage further robust, critical discussion amongst heritage and archaeological researchers working with contemporary digital data.…”
