Digital Girih, a Digital Interpretation of Islamic Architecture

Abstract: The relation between texture, pattern and massing is a fundamental question in architecture. Classical architecture, as Leon Battista Alberti states in De Re Aedificatoria, Book VI, Chapter 2, is developed through massing and structure first; texture is added afterwards to give the bold massing and structure beauty [1].This hierarchy has of course been challenged throughout architecture history. This paper will provide a different thinking of the relationship of massing and texture in Islamic Architecture from… Show more

“…Using computer-aided design, Thalal et al [154] formulated the method of constructing periodic and aperiodic Moroccan patterns and found new ones based on the symmetry groups missing in Moroccan patterns. Finally, using digital design and fabrication methods, Riether and Baerlecken [155] provided different insights into the relationship between massing and texture on aperiodic patterns in Islamic architecture.…”

“…Projects include digitally rebuilding wooden boats based on Chiloean techniques for double-curves in architecture; reconstructing a New Orleans style shotgun house using digital fabrication processes; reinterpreting cultural design motifs with shape grammars to generate novel vernacular designs; reinterpreting patterns in Islamic architecture with parametric software and digital fabrication; and creating a novel Middle-Eastern material culture using parametric and physics-based systems. 2,[29][30][31][32][33] These projects bridge cultural signs and styles with computation through pattern and surface, dwelling in the scenographic and the decorative.…”

“…They have also shown how these patterns can be constructed in a way that is independent of Euclid's parallel postulate, allowing them to be adapted to the sphere or the hyperbolic plane in addition to the Euclidean plane (Kaplan 2005;Kaplan and Salesin 2004;Bonner and Kaplan 2017). Riether and Baerlecken (2012) use Grasshopper for scripting an algorithm based on the polygon in contact (PIC) method for manipulating the girih surface. Their Digital Girih project was built based on the research of Lu and Steinhardt (2007) and their findings on aperiodic patterns in medieval Islamic architecture.…”
