Some magnet power supplies for particle accelerators are required to ramp up their output current from close to zero and up to their maximum operation values, with precision tracking of a few Hertz reference signal. Due to the high reactive power of these current sources, one challenge is how to minimize the effects of this low frequency oscillation in the ac mains current. Additionally, the output current must present both low ripple and tracking error in relation to reference, besides good repeatability. This work describes the chosen topology as well the design and some results of a first prototype of a power supply rated 130A/20V, with the final goal of obtaining a 1kA/900V unit.
