Nutritional quality of the hepatopancreas and gonads of orange portunid mud crab, Scylla olivacea was evaluated for each gender under four treatment of different water velocities (0, 20, 40 and 60 cm s −1 ), in terms of nutrient reserve and nutrient for reproduction. About 56 crabs were used in this study in which fatty acids composition was analysed using gas chromatography mass-spectrometry (GC-MS). For hepatopancreas analysis, monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) were present in the highest fatty acids concentration, followed by polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and, saturated fatty acids (SFAs). However, long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) were displayed in low concentration in the hepatopancreas. Total fatty acid (TFAs) composition was significantly higher at moderate velocity of 20 cm s −1 compared to other water velocity treatments. For gonad analysis, 20 cm s −1 showed the highest TFA concentration of 93.34 mg g −1 while, the lowest concentration of 3.90 mg g −1 occurred at 0 cm s −1 . There were significant differences in male and female crab’s fatty acids contents of gonads at all flow velocities challenged ( p < 0.05). PUFAs and MUFAs were dominant while, SFAs were observed at low concentration. This study revealed that, concentration of PUFAs increased as gonad maturation increased. The decreasing concentration of hepatopancreas fatty acids over the culture period indicated that nutrient was shifted from the hepatopancreas, to be used as energy reserved to gonads for further growth of eggs and offspring. The linkages between water flow strength, hepatopancreas, and gonad fatty acids concentrations, is fundamental knowledge useful in establishing efficient habitat velocities selection which will improve aquaculture production of mud crabs with high quality broodstock.

The present investigation was undertaken with the primary objective of critically evaluating the progression of early developmental stages and concurrent enzymatic activity in the Japanese freshwater shrimp, Neocaridina denticulata sinensis. The scope of the study encompassed a thorough examination of the growth patterns and respective enzyme activity of N. denticulata larvae at distinctive phases, specifically at 15, 30, 45, and 60 days after hatching (DAH). This research turned its focus toward three prominent enzymes: amylase, lipase, and protease, and their respective roles and activity levels in the course of the developmental process. Throughout the duration of the empirical experiment, there was a consistent trajectory of growth documented, devoid of any significant abnormalities that might otherwise mar the data. Consequently, this implies a strong adaptability of N. denticulata to the conditions imposed by the experimental setup. Drawing a comparison between the larval and adult stages, the study found noteworthy parallels in both physical attributes and histological characteristics. This fascinating discovery reveals a certain level of developmental uniformity across the lifespan of this species. Interestingly, the enzyme activity demonstrated a trend of increment with the progression of each growth stage. Among the enzymes studied, Protease registered the highest level of activity, emphasizing its potential crucial role in the development and growth of N. denticulata larvae. However, a certain anomaly was observed in the Lipase activity, which exhibited a dip at specific stages of the larval cycle, only to increase as the larvae aged. This intermittent pattern in lipase activity sparks interest and warrants further investigation to comprehend its implications fully. Overall, the N. denticulata demonstrated a robust growth pattern under the experimental conditions imposed, with enzyme activity showcasing a parallel increment in tandem with the age of the larvae. Despite the findings, the current study has opened doors for future explorations, particularly with a focus on enzyme activity associated with the digestive tract development in the early stages of the development of N. denticulata. This particular aspect remains largely uncharted and promises to significantly augment our understanding in this relatively less explored domain.

Decapod crustaceans are a very diverse group and have evolved to suit a wide variety of diets. Alpha-amylases enzymes, responsible for starch and glycogen digestion, have been more thoroughly studied in herbivore and omnivore than in carnivorous species. We used information on the α-amylase of a carnivorous lobster as a connecting thread to provide a more comprehensive view of α-amylases across decapods crustaceans. Omnivorous crustaceans such as shrimps, crabs, and crayfish present relatively high amylase activity with respect to carnivorous crustaceans. Yet, contradictory results have been obtained and relatively high activity in some carnivores has been suggested to be a remnant trait from ancestor species. Here, we provided information sustaining that high enzyme sequence and overall architecture conservation do not allow high changes in activity, and that differences among species may be more related to number of genes and isoforms, as well as transcriptional and secretion regulation. However, recent evolutionary analyses revealed that positive selection might have also occurred among distant lineages with feeding habits as a selection force. Some biochemical features of decapod α-amylases can be related with habitat or gut conditions, while less clear patterns are observed for other enzyme properties. Likewise, while molt cycle variations in α-amylase activity are rather similar among species, clear relationships between activity and diet shifts through development cannot be always observed. Regarding the adaptation of α-amylase to diet, juveniles seem to exhibit more flexibility than larvae, and it has been described variation in α-amylase activity or number of isoforms due to the source of carbohydrate and its level in diets, especially in omnivore species. In the carnivorous lobster, however, no influence of the type of carbohydrate could be observed. Moreover, lobsters were not able to fine-regulate α-amylase gene expression in spite of large changes in carbohydrate content of diet, while retaining some capacity to adapt α-amylase activity to very low carbohydrate content in the diets. In this review, we raised arguments for the need of more studies on the α-amylases of less studied decapods groups, including carnivorous species which rely more on dietary protein and lipids, to broaden our view of α-amylase in decapods crustaceans.
