Digestive enzyme profiles from foregut contents of blue swimming crab, Portunus pelagicus from Straits of Johor, Malaysia

Abstract: This study describes the digestive enzyme profiles from foregut contents of the blue swimming crab, Portunus pelagicus (L.), from Straits of Johor, Malaysia. Adult male (mature and immature) and female (ovarian maturation stages 1-4) blue swimming crabs were assayed for the presence of digestive enzymes (protease, trypsin, amylase and lipase) in the foregut. The results show that in some instances, significant differences in enzyme activities were observed between the sexes of P. pelagicus. Protease, trypsin, … Show more

“…The crabs were acclimatised and experiments processed in salinity 20 ppt ( Amin et al 2016 , 2018 ). The maintenance of the crabs was based on the previous published methods ( Azra & Ikhwanuddin 2015 , 2016 ; Abol-Munafi et al 2017 ). In brief, water temperature was controlled at an average 24°C–28°C.…”

“…Enzymes, including proteases, as previously explicated, serve a crucial role in protein digestion. These enzymes are secreted in the hepatopancreas, manifesting as trypsin and chymotrypsin (Gildberg, 1988;Sainz et al, 2005;Abol-Muna et al, 2016;Asaikkutti et al, 2016). Additionally, amylases, entrusted with the intricate task of carbohydrate digestion, effectuate the breakdown of complex carbohydrates into constituent simple sugars within the hepatopancreas (Navarrete et al, 2006;Rodríguez-Viera et al, 2021).…”

“…The digestive enzymes of omnivore crabs [6][7][8][9][10][11] and shrimps [12,13] have been studied from an evolutionary perspective because differences between plants and animals force trade-offs in the traits required to use these feeds simultaneously [14]. Likewise, digestive enzymes adaptation to a vegetarian diet has been studied in different species [15] as at least 31 lineages of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial crustaceans have independently overcome the challenge of consuming plant material [16].…”
