“…Injection of anhydrous ammonia into a sheeted stack (Sundst0l, Coxworth and Mowat, 1978) has been used to produce treated straws which were offered to wether sheep (Lawlor and O'Shea, 1979;Gordon and Chesson, 1983) or to rams (Borhami and Johnsen, 1981). Either aqueous or anhydrous ammonia can be used in the stack method; the former is generally used in the UK whereas in Scandinavia the latter is more common.…”

“…Also urea can be used as a nitrogen supplement in diets of sodium hydroxide treated roughages (hliller et al 1977;@rskov & Grubb, 1978;Gihad, 1979;Ali & Sorensen, 1979). Previous studies (Borhami & Johnsen, 1981), showed that rumen fermentation and nitrogen utilization were apparently similar in sheep fed barley based concentrate mixtures plus either sodium hydroxide treated straw supplemented with various sources of nitrogen or ammonia treated straw. It has been shown that the beneficial effect of ammonia treatment of straw was more evident when fed with low concentrate than with high concentrate diets to growing animals (Horton, 1978 andGarret et al, 1979).…”
