Digestibility of dry matter and nutrients from three ingredients by the carps, Labeo fimbriatus (Bloch, 1795) and Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758 with a note on digestive enzyme activity

Abstract: This study was conducted in indoor, aerated plastic tubs to estimate the digestibility of dry matter and nutrients by the carps, Labeo fimbriatus (Bloch, 1795) and Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758, from three feed ingredients viz., azolla, soybean meal and silkworm pupa incorporated at levels ranging from 0-40% in a diet comprising equal amounts of rice bran and groundnut oil cake using crude fibre as the marker. Activity of the major digestive enzymes was also estimated in the gut of fish at the end of the exp… Show more

“…Further studies in fish, showed that increased substitution or replacement of FM by insect meal simultaneously increase the chitin level and affected the digestibility of proteins (Longvah et al, 2011) and lipids (Kroeckel et al, 2012). Replacement of FM by 30% non-deoiled SWP showed higher protein digestibility in catla (Umalatha et al, 2018), common carp (Jayaram and Shetty, 1980;Nandheesa et al, 1990;Gangadhar et al, 2017) and Labeo firmbriatus (Gangadhar et al, 2017), compared to fishes fed control diet.…”

“…However, arachidonic acid content in fish muscle was significantly increased when replacing different proportions of FM with GBFLM, indicating that larvae are appropriate vectors for introducing target PUFA in fish muscle. Silkworm pupa (SWP) meal has been successfully used as a fish feed ingredient by several authors (Gangadhar et al., 2017; Ji et al., 2015). Chakraborty et al.…”

Dry Azolla meal at 25% inclusion level in tilapia feed (Abdel‐Tawwab 2008) and fresh Azolla meal at the same incorporation level in the diet of the silver barb (Das et al .…”
