Digestibility, growth and pigmentation of astaxanthin, canthaxanthin or lutein diets in Lake Kurumoi rainbowfish,Melanotaenia parva(Allen) cultured species

Abstract: New cultured ornamental fish namely Lake Kurumoi rainbowfish Melanotaenia parva (Allen) run into reduced of colour performances when reared in the aquaria, consequently, fish feed must be added with carotenoids as a pigment source. The aim of this study was to evaluate the digestibility, growth and pigmentation of astaxanthin, canthaxanthin and lutein in diet. Apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) of dry matter, lipid, protein, carotenoids, growth and pigmentation were studied in twenty fish after 14 and 5… Show more

“…Considering that the group with 50 mg/kg ASTX had the best growth performances, the elevation of lipid content and SFA or MUFA content in this group could possibly be a side effect of good growth performances. In several fish species such as Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (Christiansen & Torrissen, ), common carp Cyprinus carpio (Jagruthi et al, ) and Lake Kurumoi rainbowfish Melanotaenia parva (Meilisza et al, ), the growth‐promoting effects of ASTX have been demonstrated. In terrestrial animals, ASTX has also been shown to have positive effects on health status of liver and intestine (Bhuvaneswari et al, ; Costanzo et al, ; Yang et al, ; Zhang et al, ).…”

“…The result in Table 2 showed that carotenoids tested feed directly affected the growth and survival rate of the Kurumoi rainbowfish (Meilisza et al, 2017). Niu et al (2017) and Parisanti et al (2011) reported similar results.…”

“…It was assumed that lutein absorption was lower than two other carotenoids. The statement was supported by the study by Yuangsoi & Jintasathaporn (2011) and Meilisza et al (2017) The health status of the tested fish was discovered through blood profiles. The erythrocyte content of a healthy teleost species generally ranges in 1.05−3.0×10 6 cell/mm 3 (Robert, 2012).…”
