Psychofunctional disorders are characterized as manifestations of a mainly somatic nature and of the child's behavior, without an apparent organic cause. In a period in which the capacity for verbal communication is still limited, the child uses non-verbal means of communication, through their body. Therefore, the present study aims to understand the manifestation of psychofunctional symptoms, specifically behavioral disorders, in babies aged 6 to 12 months being monitored in Primary Health Care (PHC). This is an observational, cross-sectional study with a quantitativequalitative approach. 20 dyads participated in the study, made up of babies aged 6 to 12 months, undergoing routine pediatric follow-up at PHC, and their mothers, over 18 years of age. The instruments were applied: Sociodemographic Questionnaire, developed for the study, Baby Somatic Symptoms Questionnaire and Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) in a single meeting, taking advantage of the mother and child going to the health unit for follow-up routine pediatric care. Subsequently, consultations were carried out on the medical records of babies whose mothers scored for depression on the EPDS scale. In general, mothers evaluated their children's eating and digestion positively, although more than half of them show behaviors of refusing food (60%), at least sometimes, and behaviors of putting inedible things in their mouths (80%). Four mothers (20%) presented scores indicative of depression, according to the criteria adopted. These mothers presented positive evaluations of their child's diet and digestion, but, at the same time, they presented eating and digestive complaints during the application of the questionnaire and throughout the followup at the health unit.

RESUMO Objetivo compreender como é a formação, o conhecimento, a demanda e a atuação clínica dos fonoaudiólogos do estado do Rio Grande do Sul na temática de distúrbios alimentares pediátricos. Métodos estudo transversal, descritivo, de abordagem quantitativa. A população foi composta por profissionais de Fonoaudiologia atuantes nas instituições de saúde e educação dos 42 municípios de abrangência da Macrorregião Centro-Oeste do Rio Grande do Sul. O contato com os participantes ocorreu a partir de um cadastro disponibilizado pelas Coordenadorias Regionais de Saúde dessa macrorregião. A coleta de dados ocorreu por meio de um questionário online disponível na plataforma Formulários Google. Resultados o conhecimento para a atuação junto à população pediátrica com distúrbio alimentar mostrou-se insuficiente para a adequada condução dos casos. As maiores dúvidas das fonoaudiólogas foram a respeito da etiologia e tratamento da doença, além de 74,1% das participantes referirem insegurança para avaliar e tratar os pacientes com esse quadro. Conclusão a maioria das fonoaudiólogas da Macrorregião Centro-Oeste do Rio Grande do Sul sente insegurança para atuar com o distúrbio alimentar pediátrico e relata pouco conhecimento sobre o tema. Portanto, considera-se necessário o investimento em formação continuada para as profissionais, a fim de favorecer a criação de saberes comuns, fornecendo subsídios científicos e elementos técnicos para a replicação nos seus locais de trabalho.

Objective: to present characteristics related to feeding difficulties (FD) in Brazilian children. Methodology: cross-sectional, observational, descriptive study with a quantitative approach that used a structured electronic questionnaire on FD, management and reaction of caregivers to these difficulties, family repercussions, source of knowledge on the subject and professional approach. Results: one thousand caregivers of children aged between 6 months and 10 years answered the questionnaire in full. FD initially manifested between 1 and 4 years of age in 62% of children. Rejection of trying new foods was the main FD (61%); 65% of the children consumed five or less types of food/day, with cooked foods being preferred by 79%; 33% of caregivers attributed the cause of FD to inadequate examples of family feeding and 32% admitted difficulties in keeping the child focused during feeding. Most caregivers reported that FD don’t affect or have little effect on the family dynamics or child’s school life. Caregivers reported offering another food to replace the refused one (42%), insisting on offering a new food (30%) and seeking guidance from a pediatrician (50%) or nutritionist (28%), who advise repeatedly offering new foods in different forms/preparations (41%); 70% of caregivers maintain appointment with the same pediatrician after diagnosis of FD. As a result of FD, 86% of caregivers fear that their children will develop “low immunity” and become sick. Conclusions: FD in the first years of life is prevalent in Brazil, causing concerns for caregivers of these children.
