Diffusion-weighted MRI in the follow-up of chronic periaortitis

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the usefulness of diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) for the assessment of the intraindividual follow-up in patients with chronic periaortitis (CP) under medication. Methods: MRI data of 21 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed untreated disease were retrospectively examined before and after medical therapy, with a median follow-up of 16 weeks. DWI parameters [b800 signal, apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values] of the CP and psoas muscle were analysed together with the extent and con… Show more

“…As known from treatment monitoring studies in other diseases, corticosteroids may result in decreased FDG uptake representing decreased bone marrow activity after successful treatment (18)(19)(20). Similarly, lower signal intensities and higher ADC values have been observed after steroid treatment on DWI MRI (21). In daily clinical practice, however, myeloma patients have often initiated steroid therapy at time of imaging due to their clinical condition.…”

“…periaortitis before and after either prednisone or tamoxifen treatment. 3 The periaortic fibrous tissue had high signal intensity on DWI, which resolved with treatment. Normal tissues, including spinal cord, bone marrow, and spleen, as well as neoplastic and inflammatory lesions, show low diffusion.…”
