The porous asphalt pavements is often used in important occasion for its special properties and performance which can be to a great extent attributed to the binder—high viscosity and elasticity asphalt (HVEA). To prepare high demanding binder for porous asphalt pavements, the polyurethane prepolymer (PUP) and styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) were used to modify the matrix asphalt compositely. First, based on a series of physical tests, the effects of binder composition on performance of SBS/PUP HVEA binder (SBS/PUP‐HVEA) were investigated. Then the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) test was conducted to investigate the reaction mechanism of SBS/PUP‐HVEA binder. Last, the fluorescence microscopy, stability tests, multiple stress creep recovery test, and differential scanning calorimetry test were carried out to evaluate and compare the phase structure, storage, high‐temperature performance, thermostability characteristics of several HVEA binders. It is found that the composite modification of SBS and PUP can produce high quality binder which possesses high viscosity and high elasticity. And the composition of SBS/PUP‐HVEA were recommended as follows: Shell‐70# can be chosen as matrix asphalt, the contents of SBS modifier (SBS1301:SBS4303 = 1:2), H2122A PUP, chain extender M‐OEA, and crosslinker sulfur were suggested 4%, 5%, 0.5%, and 1‰, respectively. The new functional groups observed in FTIR confirmed the existence of physical and chemical reactions in the modification process, which were beneficial to improve the high temperature performance and storage stability of the binder. SBS/PUP‐HVEA had good phase structure, storage stability, high temperature performance, and thermostability compared to other HVEA binders. This study demonstrated that the SBS/PUP compositely modified asphalt possessed high viscosity and high elasticity, which can be used in the porous asphalt mixture and other highly demanding working environment as well.

An attempt has been made to investigate the effect of the block length of hydrophilic segments on the structure and mass transfer properties of segmented polyurethane (HSPU). Three different block lengths of hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) segments were used, namely PEG‐200, PEG‐2000 and PEG‐3400, where the numbers indicate the molecular weight of the PEG in g mol−1. The HSPU were characterized using Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and tensile testing. Mass transfer properties were measured by sorption and water vapour flux (WVF) measurements. The control sample polyurethanes without PEG and a sample with PEG‐200 showed amorphous structure and an unclear phase separation as detected by WAXD, DSC and DMTA. There is evidence that the introduction of PEG blocks into the polyurethane matrix aids soft‐segment crystallization. The percentage crystallinity of soft segments was the highest with PEG‐2000 and an increase of PEG block length to 3400 g mol−1 resulted in a decrease in crystallinity. Mechanically, polyurethane without PEG is tough while percentage strain at maximum load increased with increasing block length of PEG. In addition, sorption and WVF increased linearly with increasing PEG block length and with temperature. The permeability of such HSPUs is a function of temperature and showed a good fit to an Arrhenius form. Copyright © 2005 Society of Chemical Industry

Abstract-An attempt has been made to review the influences of different structural factors on physical and water vapor transport properties of segmented shape memory polyurethane (SPU) for breathable textile, biomedical and many other industrial applications. The differences between ordinary, segmented and segmented shape memory polyurethanes have been reviewed. The principle of temperature-sensitive SPU has been stated. Water vapor transport through dense segmented polyurethane is a collective process of diffusion and sorption and, hence, the permeability of mass molecules through dense membrane depends on both diffusion and sorption. Therefore, the study of different structural factors on water vapor transport properties are important, in order to enhance the permeability of non-porous membranes. The effects of different structural factors, viz., hard and soft segment, functional groups, hydrophilic groups, crystallites and additives on permeability have also been included in this review article.
