Preparation and properties of high viscosity and elasticity asphalt by styrene–butadiene–styrene/polyurethane prepolymer composite modification

Abstract: The porous asphalt pavements is often used in important occasion for its special properties and performance which can be to a great extent attributed to the binder—high viscosity and elasticity asphalt (HVEA). To prepare high demanding binder for porous asphalt pavements, the polyurethane prepolymer (PUP) and styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) were used to modify the matrix asphalt compositely. First, based on a series of physical tests, the effects of binder composition on performance of SBS/PUP HVEA binder (SBS… Show more

“…The block polymer, especially styrene-butadiene-styrene is commonly used as the modifier for asphalt binder attributed to its abundant availability, cost-effectiveness, and acceptable performance. 1 However, issues like rutting, oil flooding, severity of environmental agents, and economic growth leading to a concurrent increase in traffic loads has greatly hindered these applications of asphalt. 2 Hence, improving the mechanical properties of styrene-butadiene-styrene modified asphalt (SBSMA) with network structure 3 under high temperature by adding additives has been widely studied.…”

“…Adding filler oil can effectively increase the high-temperature flowability of direct injection modifiers and improve the melt index. When mixed with high-temperature stones in the mixing plant, it promotes the rapid melting of the modifier [43][44][45][46].…”

“…Styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS), as a favorable modifier, has been verified and widely utilized in the construction of asphalt pavement to improve the performance properties of bituminous materials over a wide range of servicing temperatures [ 10 ]. Some studies validated that the addition of proper content SBS modifiers with asphalt binder could remarkably increase the viscosity of the asphalt binder and further improve the adhesion property [ 11 ]. However, most investigations focused on engineering performance using experimental methods, while the improvement mechanism is difficult to be revealed [ 12 , 13 ].…”
