Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy: a clinical study of tuberculin skin tests reading

Abstract: International audienceDiffuse reflectance spectroscopy is a technique widely used to determine optical properties of tissues: scattering and absorption coefficients. In this study, we present the development of a low-cost optical instrument usable in a clinical environment based upon the spatially resolved diffuse reflectance spectroscopy approach. This instrument has been used in a clinical study to support the diagnosis of tuberculosis. The idea is to establish a new scanning method for an early detection of… Show more

“…Various ways to implement srDRS have been reported in the literature. 1,5,[12][13][14][15][16] Most common srDRS instruments involve a broadband source and a spectrophotometer, both coupled to a fiber-optic probe ensuring light delivery and collection directly in contact with tissue. This approach has led to the development of portable instruments that have been deployed in a variety of clinical and preclinical studies.…”

“…This approach has led to the development of portable instruments that have been deployed in a variety of clinical and preclinical studies. 5,16,17 Typical fiber-based probes consist of a concentric arrangement of multiple collection fibers around a central illumination fiber for maximization of signalto-noise ratio (SNR), 5,16 as shown in Fig. 1(a).…”

“…The simulation describes photons travelling through a semi-infinite medium and measured at the medium's surface, under contact conditions. The essential principle for the calculation of the optical properties through the DRS system described in [6] lies in the reflectance correlation of an unknown sample with respect to a reference phantom. With the known optical properties µ s and µ a of the reference phantom, the simulated diffusion reflectance, expressed as a function of the measurement distance, can be determined and compared to the experimental reflectance measurement.…”

“…We have developed a low-cost optical instrument based upon the spatially resolved diffuse reflectance spectroscopy [4] to detect in vivo delayed hypersensitivity reaction (occurrence of an erythema and an induration) either in a clinical environment or at a point of care. The first addressed application was tuberculosis skin tests reading [5].…”
