Differentiation of wood‐derived vanillin from synthetic vanillin in distillates using gas chromatography/combustion/isotope ratio mass spectrometry for δ13C analysis

Abstract: The results show that synthetic vanillin added to a distillate could be differentiated from vanillin derived from oak barrels by their respective δ C values. The GC/C/IRMS method could be a useful tool in the determination of adulteration of distillates.

“…40,41 Thus, the 14 C isotope was widely used in paleoceanography, paleogeology, paleoclimatology, and so on to determine the geologic age. 42 In addition, radiocarbon 14 C determination can well distinguish the petrochemical precursors from botanical precursors. With the 13 C isotope as the stable carbon isotope, the ratio was not changed following temporal variation.…”

“…The 13 C isotope ratio (δ 13 C, isotope ratio of 13 C/ 12 C) of specific compounds can be affected by the biogenetic pathway (C3, C4, or CAM) and by environmental factors. 18,42 Herein, this work reported a low-cost NiCo 2 O 4 /SiO 2 catalyst to oxidize a variety of typical natural precursors to vanillin by the one-step synthesis method under lower oxygen pressure (0.035 MPa). The catalytic system showed excellent performance in transferring various 4-substituted guaiacols (such as 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol) to vanillin with the separation yield of more than 86.3%.…”

“…Market value of synthetic vanillin is only about 10-20 USD kg -1 while vanillin derived from Vanilla spp. is 1500 USD kg -1 (van Leeuwen et al 2018). Although there is a distinct price advantage of the synthetic counterparts, consumer interests to natural compounds, that considered as healthy, has forced many companies to discover new strategies to produce natural flavors such as vanillin (Luziatelli et al 2019).…”

“…This is due to the robust isotope fractionation (ε app = − 216 ± 19 mUr) between plant δ 2 H LM and precipitation δ 2 H Pre , which is controlled by air temperature in the mid-latitude regions 25 , 26 . Most of the studies of δ 2 H LM values have applied them to reconstruct paleoclimate 27 30 , to differentiate biogeochemical processes 20 , 22 , and to trace the geographical origin of organic matter 31 , 32 . However, the analytical application of δ 2 H LM to study the degradation of plant materials has been rarely reported.…”
