Differential Physiological Traits, Ion Homeostasis and Cane Yield of Sub-Tropical Sugarcane Varieties in Response to Long-Term Salinity Stress

Abstract: Sugarcane grown under a wide range of agro-climatic conditions accounts for ~80% of the sugar production worldwide. Since sugarcane productivity is severely affected by abiotic stresses and hence, an experiment was conducted for two consecutive years during 2020 and 2021 on popular sub-tropical sugarcane varieties. The experiment was laid out in two-factorial RBD consisting of nine sugarcane genotypes (Co 98014, Co 0118, Co 0238, Co 05011, Co 06034, Co 09022, Co 12029, Co 15023 and Co 15027) and salinity treat… Show more

“…It was noted from the results that S. oleoides showed lesser reduction or maintained E under lower salinity level. Such decrease in leaf gas exchange attributes might be attributed to decrease in CO 2 fixation due to stomatal closure (Dhansu et al 2022) or due to reduction in carboxylase activity and enhanced oxygenase activity of Rubisco enzyme (Sudhir and Murthy 2004). Fluorescence of leaf chlorophyll was a good indicator of photosynthesis activity which also provides an insight to how efficiently a leaf is performing photosynthesis.…”

“…During salt stress, the chlorophyll content of sugarcane becomes reduced, and this impacts the plant’s photosynthetic capacity. Commercial varieties, which have higher chlorophyll content during salt stress, exhibit higher activity of aminolevulinic acid synthase (ALA synthase) or lower chlorophyllase ( Dhansu et al., 2022 ). The interruption in the photosynthetic potential caused by lower photosynthetic pigments reduces the primary production efficiency of the cane crop.…”
