Differential Kinetics and Distribution of Antibodies in Serum and Nasal and Vaginal Secretions after Nasal and Oral Vaccination of Humans

Abstract: Although nasal vaccination has emerged as an interesting alternative to systemic or oral vaccination, knowledge is scarce about the immune responses after such immunization in humans. In the present study, we have compared the kinetics and organ distribution of the antibody responses after nasal and oral vaccination. We immunized female volunteers nasally or orally with cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) and determined the specific antibody levels in serum and nasal and vaginal secretions, as well as the number of … Show more

“…Briefly, analysis was done using several arbitrarily assigned cut points, comparing HPV-16 positive with HPV-16 negative women's OD values and a cut point chosen with maximum specificity. Total Ig estimations on CVR specimens were conducted as described by Rudin et al [1998] using goat anti-human IgA, alpha chain specific or IgG, specific for gamma-chains (Dako, Carpinteria, CA) and standards, polyclonal human IgA or IgG (Dako). CVR antibody results were standardized to total the Ig to account for antibody changes with the menstrual cycle.…”

“…Nasal vaccination is often superior to oral application and might result in a general mucosal immune reaction [22]. Therefore, we compared oral and nasal application of Salmonella harbouring an eukaryotic expression plasmid encoding L gal.…”
