Differential expression of salivary S100A7 in oral submucous fibrosis

Abstract: AimTo investigate the expression of salivary S100A7 levels among patients with oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) and healthy controls.MethodA total number of 60 participants were included in the study (30 OSF cases and 30 healthy controls). Demographic data was collected using a structured baseline questionnaire. Salivary S100A7 levels were quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Data was analyzed using Student t-test. Pearson correlation test was used to evaluate correlation between S100A7 levels and … Show more

“…In the light of the above mentioned results it can be suggested that occurrence of OSF is more common in younger age group. Similar observations have been reported by several local and Indian studies [17,18], [15,16] confirming our results.…”

“…There was a male proponderence in OSF patients. Similar young age groups and male predilection have been reported in previous studies as well [15][16][17]; Qureshi, dawani and shaikh, 2013 with mean ages also similar to ours. In the light of the above mentioned results it can be suggested that occurrence of OSF is more common in younger age group.…”

“…S1007 was first isolated from squamous epithelial cells in psoriatic skin. The levels of salivary S100A7 were higher in OSF patients than the healthy normal group [102]. High S100A7 expression is observed in potentially malignant oral disorders and is associated with the risk of malignant transformation in oral dysplasia [103,104].…”

“…Epidemiological and in vitro experimental studies have established areca nut (in various preparations) as the principal etiological agent causing OSMF 5 . Due to the widespread availability of areca nut and smokeless chewable tobacco in Pakistan, it is consumed in large quantities contributing to the high frequency of OSMF in Pakistan 6 . According to a study carried out in a Pakistani village, 99 percent of OSMF patients had previously used areca nut 7 .…”
