“…Mouse IRBP mRNA is present at E11 (Liou et al, 1994), whereas IRBP protein is not detected until E17 (Carter-Dawson et al, 1986). Although the onset of IRBP synthesis in the embryonic rat retina has not been reported, IRBP mRNA is present at P0 in developing photoreceptors (Gonzalez-Fernandez et al, 1993), but the protein is first evident between P2 (Eisenfeld et al, 1985) and P5 (Gonzalez-Fernandez et al, 1993).…”

“…During the development of the human (Johnson et al, 19851, bovine (Hauswirth et al, 19921, and rodent (Eisenfeld et al, 1985;Carter-Dawson et al, 1986;GonzalezFernandez and Healy, 1990;Gonzalez-Fernandez et al, 1993b;Liou et al, 1994) retina, IRBP expression is upregulated early during retinal differentiation. In contrast to the rodent retina, the developingxenopus retina does not show a significant difference in the overall levels of IRBP and opsin mRNAs extracted from whole embryos (GonzalezFernandez et al, 1993a).…”

“…In addition, the gene for IRBP is upregulated before that of opsin (Gonzalez-Fernandez and Healy, 1990;DesJardin et al, 1993;Gonzalez-Fernandez et al, 1993b;Liou et al, 1994). However, a definite difference in the temporal expression of the m R N h for IRBP and opsin is not observed in Xenopus when Northern blots are done on RNA extracted from whole embryos (Gonzalez-Fernandez et al, 1993a).…”

“…Microscopic techniques in the 19th century allowed for the discovery of glioma-like features in some cases, thus inspiring Virchow [23] to coin the term “glioma of the retina.” In the later part of the century, Flexner [24] and Wintersteiner [25] separately observed that photoreceptor-like rosettes were frequently present in tumor sections, and re-named the tumor “neuroepithelioma.” Given the coexistence of glial and neuronal cell types from a common retinal precursor, Verhoeff and Jackson [26] suggested that the term “retinoblastoma” be used, and this name was officially adopted at the 1926 American Ophthalmological Society meeting. Later techniques, including electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry, have given further credence to the name “retinoblastoma” by confirming that the tumor is of retinal precursor cell origin, and has the potential to remain in an undifferentiated state or to differentiate into photoreceptor-like cells [27,28,29,30,31,32,33,34]. …”
