Differential expression of Cyclin D1 in keratin-producing odontogenic cysts

Abstract: Objetives: The aim of the present study was to analyze the expression levels of Cyclin D1 (CCD1), a nuclear protein that plays a crucial role in cell cycle progression, in a series of keratin-producing odontogenic cysts. Study Design: A total of 58 keratin-producing odontogenic cysts, diagnosed over ten years and classified according to the WHO 2005 criteria, were immunohistochemically analyzed in terms of CCD1 expression, which was quantified in the basal, suprabasal and intermediate/superficial epithelial co… Show more

“…This result is consistent with previous studies (Lo Muzio et al, 1999;Kimi et al, 2001;De Vicente et al, 2010;Vera-Sirera et al, 2015). An initial report on cyclin D1 in KCOTs by Lo Muzio and co-workers reported that its expression was typical for syndromic KCOTs while sporadic lesions were negative (Lo Muzio et al, 1999).…”

“…An initial report on cyclin D1 in KCOTs by Lo Muzio and co-workers reported that its expression was typical for syndromic KCOTs while sporadic lesions were negative (Lo Muzio et al, 1999). Further studies demonstrated that cyclin D1 immunostaining is an inherent feature of these tumors, whether they are primary, recurrent, or syndromic (Kimi et al, 2001;De Vicente et al, 2010;Vera-Sirera et al, 2015). Despite the fact that cyclin D1 immunoreactivity was noted in samples of normal oral mucosa (Kimi et al, 2001;Gurgel et al, 2014), our study showed that all samples of pericoronal follicles remained negative for cyclin D1.…”

“…In the present study, we have analysed for the first time to our knowledge, the expression of GLUT1, a protein transporter involved in the active uptake of glucose across cell membranes, in a series of KPOCs, which constitute a heterogeneous group of cystic odontogenic lesions, that are often aggressive in character, with high rates of recurrence and multifocality [ 1 ], and are associated with a marked proliferative activity [ 2 , 3 ].…”

“…Keratin-producing odontogenic cysts (KPOCs) form a heterogeneous group of cystic lesions that are often aggressive in character, with high rates of recurrence and multifocality [ 1 ], associated to a marked proliferative activity [ 2 , 3 ]. The lesional spectrum of KPOCs includes primarily orthokeratinised odontogenic cysts (OOC) and odontogenic keratocysts, which, according to WHO guidelines [ 4 ] are also referred to as keratocystic odontogenic tumours (KCOTs), in accordance with KCOTs being true tumoural growths.…”

“…[17][18][19][20] The high infiltrative growth of OKC was comparable to AM. Due to this nature of OKC, a change in its terminology was long proposed and suggestions were made to consider it to be a neoplasm instead of a cyst.…”
