“…Concerning other important factors related to the modulation of glucose levels, Fangmann et al 45 reported how the ingestion of casein or of a specific oligopeptide from casein has an in vivo impact on FGF-21 (which is a metabolic modulator implied in the decrease of glucose levels and improvement of insulin sensitivity without hypoglycaemia) in subjects with obesity ( n = 40, mean age of 41 years old) in a randomized double-blind cross-over design for 20 weeks (8 of intervention, 4 wash-out, 8 of intervention). The results showed that the concentration of FGF-21 was decreased in these patients with obesity without T2DM after ingesting the protein, but not in the ones suffering from the disease.…”

“…with an increase in the insulin sensitivity index by 20% . In obese patients, oral supplementation of 0.5 g of β-casein hydrolysate in whey drink for 8 weeks could increase the serum concentration of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21), a metabolic regulator in lowering glucose and improving insulin sensitivity . In addition, several studies showed that protein hydrolysates with high amounts of peptides could also exhibit an antidiabetic effect.…”

“…238 In obese patients, oral supplementation of 0.5 g of β-casein hydrolysate in whey drink for 8 weeks could increase the serum concentration of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21), a metabolic regulator in lowering glucose and improving insulin sensitivity. 239 In addition, several studies showed that protein hydrolysates with high amounts of peptides could also exhibit an antidiabetic effect. Consumption of 500 mg enzymatic hydrolysate from Styela clava flesh tissue hydrolysate daily for 4 weeks significantly decreased glycated hemoglobin (HbA 1C ) levels by 2.7% (p < 0.05) compared with the basal level in diabetic patients.…”

“…Data from the FoCus cohort were used to address several different research questions to date, relating to, e.g., diabetes and microbiome [ 32 34 ], microbiome association studies [ 35 ], multiple sclerosis [ 36 ], hypertension and genome wide association studies [ 37 40 ] in national and international consortia as well as in small more specific research [ 41 47 ] and intervention studies [ 48 ] (see Table S4).…”

“…There was no effect on inflammation, but the serum level of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21) which is associated with beneficial effects (e.g. glucose-lowering and improvement of insulin sensitivity) was increased in the verum group [ 48 ].…”
