Differential effects of facilitative and nonfacilitative behavioral counselors.

Abstract: This study was designed to investigate the differential effects of behavioral counselors. It was hypothesized that behavorial counselors who were facilitative, that is, high in their offerings of warmth, empathy, and genuineness, would be more effective than nonfacilitative behavioral counselors, that is, low in their offerings of warmth, empathy, and genuineness. Both types of counselors received an equal amount of training in verbal reinforcement procedures. The criterion variable was frequency of verbal inf… Show more

“…Vitalo (1970) found that Taf€el-type verbal conditioningfollowing a 10-15 minute interview was effective only when the interviewer was one who had shown high therapeutic conditions in a separate assessment of his work with patients. Mickelson & Stevic (1971) found that high-conditions counsellors were more effective than low-conditions counsellors in inducing information-seeking behaviour by high-school students in 'behavioural counselling ' concerned with vocational and educational goals.…”

“…In the 1970s, several behavioral treatment analogous experiments were conducted that investigated the impact of the Rogerian therapist variables on subjects' performance during conditioning and deconditioning tasks. It was demonstrated that facilitative therapist behavior does influence the achievements of subjects on learning tasks and systematic desensitization procedures (Mickelson & Stevic, 1971;Morris & Suckerman, 1974a, 1974bVitalo, 1970).…”

“…Patterson (1967) noted that a major problem with the numerous selection studies conducted in the past has been the lack of agreement as to what characterizes the "effective" counselor; he believes that this problem has been largely overcome by recent evidence (Carkhuff & Berenson 1967;Mickelson & Stevie 1971;Truax & Carkhuff 1967).…”
