Different virtual stator winding configurations of open-end winding five-phase PM machines for wide speed range without flux weakening operation

Abstract: This paper presents a specific control strategy of double-ended inverter system for wide-speed range of openwinding five phase PM machines. Different virtual winding configurations (star, pentagon, pentacle and bipolar) can be obtained by choosing the appropriated switching sequences of two inverters. The motor's speed range is thus increased.

“…OeW drives are particularly interesting for EVs/ HEVs [5] and electric ship propulsion [6,7], where use of two isolated supplies may not represent a problem. The OeW topologies have also been investigated as a means of extending the operating speed range of five-phase permanent magnet synchronous [8] and three-phase induction machine [9] drives.…”

“…A fault tolerant system can be achieved by using additional components or by using multi-phase drives which have more degree of freedoms compared with traditional three-phase drives. This is why multiphase machines have been studied extensively in the past decade [4,5,6,7]. This study deals with 5-phase machines and drives which offer possibility of working in fault mode (1 or 2 opened phases).…”

“…In [13], the speed range of a five-phase PM machine is extended by switching between different stator configurations. A similar procedure is achieved in [14] but with electronic switching. In this paper, the pole changing effect is electronically ensured by the inverter, depending of the levels of first and third harmonics of current.…”
