Present study was conducted on 12 dry Surti buffaloes to assess the effect of heat stress amelioration during dry period on their biological responses and milk production in subsequent lactation. Buffaloes were divided into control (n=6) and treatment (n=6) groups. Treatment buffaloes were housed only during their dry period in shed having wall-mounted fans, roof whitewashed with microfine lime powder and open paddock covered with 75% green net. At -8, -3, +1 and +3 weeks of calving, blood collection and recording of observations (physiological, skin thermography and BCS) were done. Milk composition and daily milk yield were recorded at every 2 weeks up to 11 weeks of lactation, respectively. Shed modification was successful in lowereing air temperature and THI indicating thermal comfort for treatment buffaloes as also revealed by lower temperatures of rectum, tympanic membrane, surface like forehead, eye, udder, coronet and lower respiration rate. Treatment group maintained significantly higher BCS, glucose, total protein, GSH, TAS, in vitro lymphocyte proliferation, neutrophil phagocytic activity and lower levels of urea, creatinine, NEFA, BHBA, SOD, MDA, cortisol, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and HSP70. These results are indicative of minimum negative energy balance, stress and higher immune response. Milk yield and fat were higher in treatment group. Providing thermal comfort to buffaloes in dry period helped in abating the negative effects of heat stress not only during dry period but also during subsequent lactation along with improved milk yield.

This study was conducted to assess the effect of management practices along with different feed supplementation in the age of puberty of Murrah buffalo male calves. Thirty calves were divided into 5 groups, having 6 in each Group. Groups 1 to 3 were reared under routine management, while 4 to 5 were under better management practices. A basal diet was provided in Group 1. Group 2 had access to a 10% higher energy supplement (molasses) along with basal diet, Group 3 had access to a basal diet plus 10% higher energy till 12 months of age and thereafter roasted flax seed till the age of first semen ejaculation; Group 4 fed similar to Group 2, and Group 5 fed similar to Group 3. Growth performance, scrotal circumference, semen quality and quantity, testosterone concentration, and fatty acid profile of blood serum were measured fortnightly. In One-way Analysis of Variance, it was found that the provision of better management practices and a high-energy diet reduced the age of puberty (P < 0.05). The concentration of serum testosterone increased linearly with the increase in body weight. The semen quality and quantity (volume, concentration, motility, live %) were higher in Group 5 than that in Groups 1 to 4 (P < 0.01). This study concluded that the Murrah buffalo male calves have the potential to attain the age of puberty earlier with the provision of better management practices and an energy-rich diet than that of conventional.

Improved feeding during pre-calving phase affects the Body Condition Score (BCS) that subsequently dictate the postcalving productive and reproductive performance. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of three levels of concentrate supplementation [0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% of body weight (BW)] during pre-calving period on post-calving reproductive and lactation performance in Nili Ravi buffalo heifers. Twenty-six pregnant Nili-Ravi buffalo heifers at 150 ± 20 [Mean ± standard deviation (SD)] days in pregnancy with (BW=516± 57 KG, BCS (1-5) =3.98± 0.18) were selected and divided into three treatment groups; Low (n=8), Medium (n=9) and High (n=9) and allocated three dietary treatments. The treatments were basal diets composed of green fodder [dry matter (DM) = 2.0% of body weight (BW)] with three levels of Concentrates (CP=20.9 %, ME= 2.62 Mcal/kg) i.e. 0.5 (Low), 1.0 (Medium), and 1.5% (High) of the BW. The animals received same feed (forage DM at the rate of 2% of BW and concentrate at 0.5 kg per liter of milk produced on as fed basis) after calving. Increasing concentrate supplies from 0.5 to 1.5% of BW increased pre-calving dry matter intake (DMI), however, it didn't affect BW and BCS at calving. Increased concentrate supply at 1.5% of BW resulted in decrease in post calving conception rate to 33% as compared to 75 and 77.8% at 0.5 and 1.0% of BW concentrate supply. The treatment High decreased lactation length (15%) and yield (17%) as compared to Low and Medium treatment. Pre-calving supplementation of concentrate beyond 0.5% of BW showed no improvement of postcalving productive and reproductive performance. In the given dietary situation, the Nili Ravi heifers didn't require more than 0.5% of BW concentrate along with 2.0% of BW green fodder DM during post 150 days of pregnancy.
