Differences in Overweight and Obesity between the North and South of China

Abstract: Objective: Determining geographical distribution and local dietary patterns involved in being obese is useful for designing intervention strategies. Methods: We selected residents between 18 and 65 years old from 11 Chinese provinces to compare dietary patterns and BMI from the China Health and Nutrition Survey packages in 2011. We used linear and logistic regression analyses to assess the strength of association among geographic variables, the obesity problem, and dietary patterns. Results: The overall preva… Show more

“…The concept of “telomeres” was first introduced by McClintock et al, who determined that the ends of the chromosome are responsible for the stability and integrity of the chromosome, and they named it “telomere” ( 1 ). Thus, the telomere, at the end of the chromosome, is composed of thousands of tandem repeats of the TTAGGG nucleotide sequence ( 2 , 3 ). Telomeres are crucial factors in the genome’s structural integrity and protection of chromosomes from erosion ( 4 , 5 ).…”

“…This may be because the northern and southern populations of China have some differences in terms of lifestyle, diet, and the environment. According to previous studies, the northern dietary pattern is more likely to contribute to the development of overweight and obesity [ 80 ], and the northern population is more likely to have clustered cardiovascular risk factors than the southern population [ 81 ].…”
