Difference of mercury bioaccumulation in red mullets from the north-western Mediterranean and Black seas

Abstract: Abstract:The relationships between total mercury (Hg) concentration and stable nitrogen isotope ratio (δ 15 N) were evaluated in Mullus barbatus barbatus and M. surmuletus from the Mediterranean Sea and M. barbatus ponticus from the Black Sea. Mercury concentration in fish muscle was six times higher in the two Mediterranean species than in the Black Sea one for similar sized animals. “…The species is a territorial benthic fish with well-known ecological and physiological characteristics and pronounced sensitivity to different kinds of pollutants. Red mullet tends to accumulate pollutants to a greater extent than other species (Zorita et al, 2008) and has therefore been used as a bioindicator for pollution monitoring of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), PAHs, alkylphenols and metals (Insausti et al, 2009;Harmelin-Vivien et al, 2009;Ausili et al, 2008;MartinSkilton et al, 2006b).
