Difference of concentration of placental soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1(sFlt-1), placental growth factor (PlGF), and sFlt-1/PlGF ratio in severe preeclampsia and normal pregnancy

Abstract: BackgroundPlacental soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) which is an antagonist of vascular endothelial growth factor and placental growth factor (PIGF), is considered as one of etiology factors cause endothelial damage in preeclampsia due to increase of sFlt-1 level that change vascular endothelial integrity. This study aims to analyze the difference of sFlt-1 and PlGF concentration in severe preeclampsia and normal pregnancy, and the correlation between both in occurrence of severe preeclampsia.Method… Show more

“…In a study by Levine et al, a higher mean sFlt-1 value of 4382 pg/ml was reported in women with preeclampsia compared to value of 1643 pg/ml in the control group [18]. In the two separate studies by Kim et al [19] and Gurnadi JI et al [20], elevated serum concentrations of sFlt-1 in women with preeclampsia was found.…”

“…The alterations of sFlt‐1 and PIGF expression are involved in PE pathological process (Gurnadi et al, ; Lehnen et al, ). PIGF, a key local mediator in angiogenesis, belongs to the family of VEGF and mainly expressed by placentas (Gurnadi et al, ; Lehnen et al, ). Previous reports demonstrate that change in the circulating level of PIGF is closely associated with PE occurrence (Dechend & Luft, ; Grill et al, ).…”

“…The connection between circulating sFlt-1 and PlGF in preeclampsia was explored by previous studies suggesting that upregulation of the anti-angiogenic sFlt-1 in pre-eclampsia leads to binding of the angiogenic factor PlGF, with a consequent decrease in circulating free PlGF levels [6,16]. to brain edema.…”
