Dietary supplementation of Zingiber officinale and Zingiber zerumbet to heat‐stressed broiler chickens and its effect on heat shock protein 70 expression, blood parameters and body temperature

Abstract: The present study was conducted to assess the effects of dietary supplementation of Zingiber officinale and Zingiber zerumbet and to heat-stressed broiler chickens on heat shock protein (HSP) 70 density, plasma corticosterone concentration (CORT), heterophil to lymphocyte ratio (HLR) and body temperature. Beginning from day 28, chicks were divided into five dietary groups: (i) basal diet (control), (ii) basal diet +1%Z. zerumbet powder (ZZ1%), (iii) basal diet +2%Z. zerumbet powder (ZZ2%), (iv) basal diet +1%Z… Show more

“…They play an important role in protein assembling and disassembling ( Pelham, 1985 ), protein folding and unfolding ( Randall and Hardy, 1986 ), and protein translocation ( Murakami et al, 1988 ). Of the many expressed HSPs, those with a molecular weight of approximately 70 kDa, named HSP70, have been extensively studied in chicken because they seem to best correlate with heat tolerance ( Gabriel et al, 1996; Soleimani et al, 2011; Hasheimi et al, 2012; Gu et al, 2012 ;).…”

“…Ginger (Chinese name: Shengjiang), derived from the rhizomes of Zingiber officinale Roscoe, is a well-known spice and is most frequently prescribed as a traditional Chinese medicine for its stomachic, antiemetic, antidiarrheal, expectorant, antiasthmatic, hemostatic and cardiologic properties for the treatment of several gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases [13]. The most famous traditional medicinal application of Z. officinale is to promote blood circulation for the removal of blood stasis, a mechanism that is related to anti-platelet aggregation activity [4,5].…”

“…HSP-70 is a reliable index of stress in chickens while "3-hydroxyl-3-methyl-glutaryl coenzyme A reductase" has been used as an indicator of stress [34]. Pretreatment with L-Arg markedly reduced the dramatic downregulation of HSP-60 and HSP-70 in a hypoxic rat model.…”
